The hum of the fan

echoes throughout the room,

the soft grinding of the disks

reading bytes off platters;

the green phosphorescence

of the monitor shows some

blocky bits of image data

and allows the user to see

proof that the electricity he’s

Using isn’t wasted.

One day, some day

I’ll use one of these machines

to read the future and summon

knowledge from everywhere at once,

and bask in unimagined concentrations

of a new reality.

Right now though, I will play

a simple game where text is

the main attraction.

And when I’m done,

I’ll type in a command:

EXIT

Starting over again tomorrow.
